Mayito Rivera of Los Van Van Sings a Tribute to the Saints

Along with Juan Formell and Los Van Van Mayito Rivera, voted best singer in a poll at timba.com, improvises or is possessed by San Lazaro, known as Babalu Aye in the Santeria tradition. On December 17th devotees make a pilgrimage to El Rincon to honor San Lazaro and ask for health, sometimes taking days to crawl there. John Lennon is also considered a modern day saint by some, and Mayito feels strongly about the universal power of the song Hey Jude. At the end the special moment is disrupted by an uninvited Yuma who confuses Mayito with Desi Arnaz. "Que bolá, San La?".

Mayito Rivera, fue votado mejor cantante en una encuesta que hizo timba.com, improvisa, o mejor dicho es poseido por San Lázaro, tambien conocido como el orisha Babalu Aye en La Santeria. San Lazaro/Babalu Aye es uno de los santos más queridos en Cuba. Cada 17 de diciembre sus seguidores van a una iglesia cerca de La Habana llamado El Rincon para rendir tributo a San Lázaro y pedir salud. "Que bolá, San La?".

Richard here is what he told me.

Mayito:

(I was in Japan and I did not want to finish and the song came to my mind).

(A god is there who illuminates me, these ideas come in the moment, Cuban things that come with harmony and everything. This was in Fukuoka in Japan. It was totally full.

y le dije
(..and I said)

Hey Jude vamos a bailar
esta noche sera de fiesta.

(Hey Jude, let's dance, tonight is for celebration).

(That this man made this melody is magic).

(This is from the hand of god through someone who has the talent to be immortal).

(This melody came to me and I wanted everyone to vibrate with me).

Y estaba la perfecion la cancion,
Timpop con Birdland de Juan Formell.

(And it perfected the song Timpop authored by Juan Formell).

y aparte un tributo
(..and it was also a tribute).

Good story...

beyond that one event, one of the mysteries of Cuba to me is how some foreign themes get adoped as "cuban classics". Hotel California might be due to Vocal Sampling's influence I'd like to imagine? maybe Hey Jude (I've heard NG La Banda and others doing it in the last months ... ) could be Mayito's influence?

I guess the people who select the radio playlists might have something to do with it too... but once it's integrated ... then you get "Solar California" and a whole thread of cuban culture around a foreign theme, fun to see -R

...Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude...

Mayito said in that interview that Sur Caribe got the idea from him. The Hotel California thing is a curious.

So Paul wrote "Hey Jude". Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:
"Hey Jude" is a rock ballad written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and recorded by The Beatles in 1968. Originally titled "Hey Jules", the song was written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon's son Julian during his parents' divorce.

Maybe Lennon had something to do with the music, that's what inspired Mayito. There are lots of John Lennon fans in Havana. A huge mural of him was painted at Calle 23 y 10 across from ICAIC. Paul is not so well known.
